and so why is it always ok to be poking fun of christians? yes many of them are nutty and fundamentalist but many are not and have deep meaningful faiths committed to social justice and sacrificing their lives to make the world a more peaceable queendom/kingdom.
Well, if I do comment on Christians, it’s simply because Christianity is the dominant religion in America, and also because they are the only religious people I know. But I wouldn't say I poke fun at Christians. When a born-again friend of mine told me he thought I had less of a life without Christ, rather than take offense at that (and it was kind of offensive), I found the humor in it and wrote about it on the blog. It was an experience I had and that’s what “The Half Note” is about. I don’t make too many generalizations here; I don't make stories up about Christians and what I think of Christianity. I have read the teachings of Christ and Christ happens to be one of my favorite people. I have friends who are members of the United Church of Canada, Christians who are, in my mind, some of the best people I know. I have a reader from Hawaii, a Christian, and I would hang ten with her any day!
I'm aware that I may offend a Christian or a Republican or anyone else for that matter, but although sharing what I write is hugely gratifying for me, I don’t pander to anyone.
My friends know how I feel about them, and they, like me, have the ability to laugh at themselves. As for the rest, I imagine that anyone who finds this blog and takes offense will simply not return.
Peace,
Katie
And by the way, if I could have figured out a good angle, I would have written about the ridiculous people I met at a temple a few weeks ago. They laughed and danced, sang songs, held hands and broke bread. One turned out to be the angriest person I’d ever met, another snatched my camera out of my hands and yelled at me when I attempted to take a picture of my daughter and her friend. "No pictures in Temple!" he shrieked. It was just so ironic, and so fucking funny.
