I have a few Hubbard albums and I always think he sounds better on other people's albums. Such as this one where his playing in superb. Also George Coleman who never played better. Interesting that Miles Davis couldn't wait to get him out of his band. I guess he knew what he was trying to create (the great quintet) and he was right to think that GC would not fit in but he was overly disparaging of his qualities. Apparently one night Miles was standing off stage while GC did a solo and kept asking for someone to phone Sonny Rollins.
I am a lover of later early '70's Hancock - and a sucker for Fat Albert Rotunda in particular - but did he do a better album than this?
