I thought all my favorite trumpet players were long gone, but last night I heard my new friend Warren Vaché perform live, and discovered there's still at least one among us.
Listening to Vaché was like being transported to New York in the 1950's. His sound is achingly beautiful, both raw and refined, playful and packed full of the sweet sadness that paints a picture of the human heart.

When I was going to 3 jazz gigs a week in London in 1990's I used to see Warren Vache's name everywhere. He played with some of our best 50's style players such as Brian Lemon and Tony Coe (hugely underrated). I had assumed him to be British at that time I must confess. I also must confess that in this orgy of jazz gigs I never saw him live and I guess you are recommending that I should.
Great trumpeters still alive - Freddie's still going but I think his chops are gone? I can't listen to Marsalis (though I love his brother on sax). Is Clark Terry still with us?
You're right, it's about the chops, and I'll tell you something, Vache's got 'em.
Thanks, Doug.
