My mother spent years, painstakingly and lovingly gluing each and every one of our family photos into albums, and now I'm just pissed that I can't remove them to use for my blog.

Is there such a thing as a cheap, handheld scanner. That might do the trick.
We just shoot the original with the digital and the result looks almost as good as if you had used the digital in the first place. Just make sure that you are perfectly parallel to the picture and you are zoomed in close enough to cut everything but the picture out -if you get a bit of background you can always crop it out in Photoshop. Give it a try.
